Tom Gregg

Tom Gregg is a senior United Nations official with almost two decades of on-the-ground experience engaging non-state armed groups and local communities on behalf of governments, the UN and NGOs. Tom has spent the last decade expanding access for health and humanitarian workers. He lived in the tribal areas of Afghanistan from 2005 to 2008 as the UN representative working on conflict mediation, civil military relations, elections, peace efforts, and human rights. He has advised the World Health Organization, the UN, the Gates Foundation, the government of Norway and the private sector.

Tom currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. In this role, Tom advises on expanding humanitarian access for the UN to communities residing in security compromised areas. He was previously Director of Global Projects at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Swiss-based international conflict mediation organization. Before this, he was Associate Director at the Centre on International Cooperation at New York University.

Previously, Tom worked for the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations as a Special Assistant to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, as a Head of Region (Southeast Afghanistan) and in Political Affairs.

Tom has also worked at the Australian Council for International Development and the Australian National University. He has written widely on topics including foreign policy, US-China Relations, and fly fishing in Afghanistan. Tom holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Australian National University where he was a Hedley Bull scholar.
